Increasing the use of the Welsh language

We are developing policy models that organisations can use or modify. Their purpose is to assist organisations to develop internal use policies that outline their commitments in line with the requirements of the standards, and create a framework for encouraging and supporting staff to increase the use of Welsh over time.

We understand that each organisation is different in terms of their current use of the Welsh language, and their capacity for change. The policy models will take into account that institutions are on a linguistic continuum, in order to offer useful and purposeful resources.

When these are ready, an organisation will be able to adopt the policy that suits them best, and implement the steps to increase the use of Welsh within the workplace.

General guidance on the steps your organisation can take to increase the use of Welsh internally is contained in our action pack

The policies will be structured around these three themes:

Leadership

Strong leadership is important in setting expectations and leading by example to create a positive atmosphere towards the Welsh language within an organisation.

You can find advice on chairing meetings in Welsh here and by Bangor University here.

There are a number of ideas in this Arts Council guide.

Building Confidence

The small steps everyone can take to use more Welsh and how employers can encourage that.

Administrative infrastructure

By installing a robust infrastructure with your administration, human resources and technology use, you can facilitate and encourage greater language use and improve confidence in using Welsh in the workplace. The standards require that your internal procedures allow officers to use Welsh when dealing with employment matters. They also require access to technology in Welsh, and technology that supports the use of Welsh.
