As part of our promoting compliance plan, we aim to share the findings of our monitoring work in a timely and ongoing manner throughout the year. This provides organisations with an opportunity to review their operational approaches and strengthen their compliance in line with their language duties.
We analyse the results and present them in the sectoral reports below. These reports highlight good practice, as well as areas where the use of Welsh could be strengthened. We encourage all organisations to consider the findings and recommendations in the reports relevant to them.
Social Media Monitoring Surveys
Regulations No. 4 or 8 have not been included in these reports for the following reasons:
- Regulations No.4: Survey sample size too small to provide meaningful data.
- Regulation No.8: Low use of Welsh on social media, because the organisation qualifies for an exception under the regulations.
Regulations No. 4 – Standard 58
Key findings:
- Messages on Facebook and LinkedIn were examined, as well as organisational profiles.
- A high level of compliance was noted, with the Welsh language often having priority - for example, by appearing first in messages and profile descriptions.
- Videos included bilingual subtitles with Welsh first, reflecting good practice.
- Images showed a high level of compliance.
- An opportunity to improve was identified by securing Welsh contributors for video content where possible.
Regulations No. 8 – Standard 36
Key findings:
- It was noted that the gearing of the standard gives discretion to organisations to decide which content is relevant to Wales only.
- There were no examples of messages that were clearly related to Wales only, and as a result, use of the Welsh language was rare on these accounts.
- Although the statutory duty is limited, organisations are encouraged to increase the use of the Welsh language on social media as a means of promoting and promoting other Welsh language services.
