Policy decisions

Earlier this year, we held a line of inquiry on organisations' arrangements to comply with the requirements of the policy-making standards.

We have published an important report which shares our main findings, and includes a series of recommendations based on the evidence received. The report also identifies good practice, as well as some areas that need improvement.

We have prepared practical guidance and a template to support individuals through the process of assessing the impact of policy decisions on the Welsh language. The aim of the guidance is to ensure that organisations give conscientious consideration to the Welsh language when developing and implementing education policies. This package includes a clear template to follow when carrying out an impact assessment, along with an example assessment to provide practical guidance on expectations and effective approaches.

Please note that following this guidance and template does not, in itself, guarantee compliance with the requirements of the standards. Rather, it is intended to serve as a practical resource to support officers in assessing the impact of education policy decisions on the Welsh language, guiding them through the process and highlighting key principles and good practice. This guidance should also be considered alongside the existing general advice document on carrying out Welsh language policy impact assessments, as this document complements and builds upon that advice within an education context.

Below are links to recordings of our seminar on policy making standards which aimed to raise organisations' awareness of the requirements of these standards and their effect on efforts to increase the number of Welsh speakers, and on creating opportunities for people to use Welsh in their everyday lives.

The advice document offers ideas and practical advice on how to go about complying with the policy making standards including case studies and examples of methodology and templates to use.

Section 5 of the code provides practical guidance on the requirements of the policy making standards. Although these are a code of practice for organisations that come under the Welsh Language Standards Regulations (No. 1 & No. 7) the content is relevant to other bodies that are subject to the same duty in other regulations.
