The Welsh Language Commissioner has welcomed the publication of the report by the Commission for Welshspeaking Communities, Cymraeg in every community: strengthening the Welsh language, which considers communities with a medium or low density of Welsh speakers.
In response, Efa Gruffudd Jones, the Welsh Language Commissioner, said:
“Firstly, I would like to note that I greatly welcome the report and thank the Commission for the substantial work that has gone into preparing this extensive report.
“I would also like to reiterate what is emphasised throughout the report — that the Welsh language belongs to everyone in Wales, and beyond where relevant, and that fair access to the Welsh language in terms of community services and activities should be ensured wherever you live in Wales.”
“It is pleasing to see that many of the main recommendations reflect what we ourselves have noted in our manifesto for the Senedd Cymru election and, more recently, in our 5year report.
“The specific calls to strengthen community language planning, together with the emphasis on developing workplaces that allow the language to thrive, are areas that we are very keen to address. As we noted in our 5year report, these are areas where, with the appropriate investment, it is possible to make a significant difference to the growth and longterm viability of the Welsh language.”
“We also welcome the emphasis on ensuring that Welsh is a visible language.
“I would like to encourage the next Welsh Government to consider this report and to act on the recommendations early in the next Senedd term, for the longterm benefit of the Welsh language and our communities across Wales.
“As Welsh Language Commissioner, my staff and I are ready and eager to play our part in realising them.”
