The Welsh Language Commissioner has announced that Cancer Research Wales will be its chosen charity for the year ahead. The work of the Welsh cancer research charity has contributed to major improvements in cancer services for people living with the disease across Wales.
The announcement will be made today (Friday 8 August) at 12pm at the Wrecsam National Eisteddfod on the Welsh Language Commissioner's stand.
For many years, the Commissioner has chosen a charity to support annually following an internal vote between staff.
The aim is that working with Cancer Research Wales will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the charity's work as well as raise money to support them, according to Welsh Language Commissioner Efa Gruffudd Jones,
"We are delighted to announce that Cancer Research Wales is this year's Welsh Language Commissioner's charity of the year. The work they do makes a significant contribution to our understanding of this illness, an illness that affects all of us in one way or another.
"It's also pleasing to note that they were awarded the Cynnig Cymraeg (Welsh Offer) earlier this year, emphasising their commitment to the Welsh language and we look forward to working together over the coming twelve months."
Iwan Rhys Roberts from the charity Cancer Research Wales added,
"We are extremely grateful to have been chosen as Charity of the Year by the Welsh Language Commissioner's office. By 2030, it is estimated that one in two of the population in Wales will be affected by cancer and we are fully committed to funding cancer research in Wales.
"Our research takes place across Wales, in our communities, hospitals, in universities and laboratories. We are committed to being able to operate bilingually, and we were delighted to have received the Cynnig Cymraeg earlier this year as a sign of that commitment.
"Thanks again to the office of the Welsh Language Commissioner and I look forward to seeing the partnership develop in the coming year."
The official announcement will be made at 12pm this afternoon (Friday, 8 August) on the Welsh Language Commissioner's stand at the Wrecsam National Eisteddfod.
