Welsh in the workplace

It is crucial if we are to reach our aim of facilitating people to live their lives in Welsh, that more workplaces in Wales support people to use the Welsh language in their daily working practices, completing work tasks in addition to informal and social settings. We need to ensure that all workplaces support and increase the opportunities for people to use the Welsh language.

The Welsh language standards require organisations to develop a policy on how they intend to increase the use of the Welsh language within the workplace.

We want to see:

  • more organisations using the Welsh language as their primary operating language, and to maintain that situation where it is already operational
  • all organisations that implement Welsh language standards take purposeful steps to increase the use of the Welsh language internally, and enable staff to live a complete working life in Welsh
  • that each workplace increases opportunities to use the Welsh language between staff and with users of their services.

We have developed and set regulation outcomes – a series of transparent public statements on what we aim to achieve through our regulation of the Welsh language standards. One of those outcomes is that organisations increase the use of the Welsh language in their workplaces, allowing staff to work using Welsh on a day-to-day basis.

The Welsh Language Commissioner is working with strategic partners to consider how organisations can strengthen their policies and to create effective environments that improves people’s ability to work in Welsh, with the aim of increasing the use of the Welsh language in workplaces over time.
